The Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications was established on January 10, 1997, based on the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering (AIPE), which was founded in 1975. The first rector of AUPET was Gumarbek Daukeyev. It is the first non-state technical university with the status of a non-profit organization. Education is conducted in Kazakh, Russian, and in several specialties, in English.
The Gumarbek Daukeyev Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications is one of the leading technical universities in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, training personnel for fields such as energy, telecommunications, information technology and information security, space engineering, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The university prepares specialists through college, bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs.

Education of power engineers began on the basis of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute for the first time in Kazakhstan

The Faculty “Heat Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering” was founded at KazPTI

The Faculty “Heat Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering” of KazPTI is allocated to an independent university - Almaty Power Engineering Institute

The agreement between the AUPET and the Tashkent State Technical University named after Abu Raykhan Beruni on assisting scientists in conducting joint research work was signed
