SELLING DEALER – CLASSIC CAR STUDIO, ST LOUIS, MO
An instant icon, the first-generation Mustang drove America through the tumultuous Sixties and became part of the fabric of the era. The spirit of freedom it engendered is epitomized in this 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible that is dressed in Candyapple Red and powered by a 289 V8 engine. According to the selling dealer, Classic Car Studio, it’s a San Jose-built car that was originally delivered in Seattle and spent mostly of its life in the dry climates of Nevada, Arizona, and California. It was reportedly restored approximately 10 years ago by a Mustang Club of America member, who stripped the body to bare metal and had the powertrain, suspension, and brakes redone, along with the Red Crinkle vinyl interior. “It is a breeze to drive, has a wonderful ride and is the perfect cruiser,” says the seller.
POWERTRAIN
The VIN identifies this Mustang as an original C-code car, with a two-barrel 289-cu.in. OHV V8, factory rated at 200 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque. A partial VIN was not stamped on these engines in 1966, but the seller says it is code-correct and was rebuilt during the restoration, along with the three-speed automatic transmission and rear axle. All are said to be in very good condition, with the seller noting the engine “fires right up,” with a single pump of the gas pedal, and the transmission shifts smoothly. There’s no reported smoke from the engine and there’s some noted weeping around the oil pan, but it does not result in drips on the garage floor, says the seller. Powertrain service within the past two years has reportedly included a re-core of the radiator, a coolant flush, a new thermostat, and a new alternator.
EXTERIOR
“This Mustang was a wonderful example to start with for the restoration, as it had been a Western car its entire life and the integrity of the body still shows today. It would be hard to find a car with straighter body panels,” says the seller. The quality of the Candyapple Red paintwork is said to be very good, and the seller reports it was recently “cut and buffed” to enhance its shine. Noted blemishes include a few small paint touch-ups on the front of the car, while the body is said to have “no known rust.” The convertible top reportedly works well and has no known leaks, while the glass and seals are also said to be in good shape. The same reportedly goes for the exterior chrome and trim. All the exterior lights are said to work normally.
INTERIOR
“The interior is like new,” says the seller, who notes the restoration included all-new soft parts, reconditioned gauges, re-belted (original) seat buckles, new wiring and a modern radio. The cabin is dressed in Red Crinkle vinyl, and it appears in very good condition, with no holes or excessive wear in the red vinyl seat covers or carpet, notes the seller. The door panels, steering wheel, center console, and dash pad also appear in very good shape, with little apparent wear and no apparent pitting in the metal trim. The seller reports the heater and gauges are functional, with the fuel sender recently replaced.
CHASSIS
According to the seller, the chassis, braking, and suspension elements were restored and remain in great condition, with no known issues or needs. In fact, the chassis was sprayed with the correct-appearing red oxide primer and all the chassis and suspension components appear very clean. The car has power steering and the front brakes were updated to discs, for improved braking performance over the original drums. Additionally, the car was recently aligned, the wheels balanced and the brake system inspected and bled. The tires and wheels include 195/75R14 Hankook Kinergy ST whitewall radials mounted on the original 14-inch steel wheels with wire wheel covers. All are said to be in “very good condition,” with 9/32-inch tread depth on the tires and no reported curb rash on the wheel covers. The tires were reportedly installed in 2019, but their DOT date codes are not visible in the photos. “The car is smooth on the highway,” says the seller.
DOCUMENTATION
The owner will provide a clean and open Florida title for the proper transfer of ownership for this vehicle. Additional documentation for this reportedly “rust-free” and 289-powered 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible includes receipts from the recent service work. “The car has a wonderful ride and is the perfect cruiser,” says the seller. It’s also an enduring cultural icon.
